NCC wins $142m Kuwait substations contract

The Kuwait branch of Saudi Arabia's National Contracting Company (NCC) has won a contract to build 10 power substations in Kuwait.

The 132/11 kilovolt (kV) substations are located in Sabah Al-Ahmad City, according to a source close to the project.

The 24-month contract is valued at SR534m ($142m).

Kuwait's Public Authority for Housing Welfare (PAHW) is the project client.

UK-based Foster+Partners designed the masterplan for the Sabah Al-Ahmad City project, which entails the construction of more than 11,000 housing units.

The Sabah Al-Ahmad City project covers an area of 6,150 hectares and is located 70 kilometres south of Kuwait City.

It is planned to accommodate 52 schools and 70 mosques, in addition to thousands of residential units, upon completion.

Kuwait has other housing complexes planned, including the $10bn-$15bn South Saad al-Abdullah New Town and the $3.6bn South al-Mutlaa City.

In addition to decongesting Kuwait City, the new residential projects are expected to help correct real estate prices, which have risen sharply in recent years.
