Bahrain’s Ministry of Housing & Urban Planning has signed a BD119m ($316m) agreement with Beijing-based China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) to build 1,269 housing units for the third phase of the East Sitra housing project.

Housing and Urban Planning Minister Amna Bint Ahmed Al-Romaihi signed the agreement during a visit to Beijing.

The construction work for the third phase of the Sitra project will start during the first quarter of 2025.

The third phase covers an area of 670,000 square metres. It features a 23.6-kilometre main and secondary road network, a 22.8km sewage network, a 27.6km rainwater drainage network and an integrated lighting system with 753 lamp posts.

It also includes 36 electricity substations, six telecom towers and other buildings, such as a shopping mall, five commercial centres, three schools, a cultural centre, an auditorium and a child development centre.

The project’s second phase, which has 531 units, was handed over earlier this year. The first phase, which has 1,077 units,  has also been handed over. The housing ministry signed a BD260m agreement with CMEC for the construction of more than 3,000 housing units at East Sitra in December 2019.
