Amea Power starts Egypt hydrogen engineering

29 February 2024

A global engineering services company has started pre-front-end engineering (feed) works for an integrated green hydrogen-based ammonia production facility in Egypt.

Dubai-based clean energy developer and investor Amea Power is the developer of the project, located in the coastal town of Ain Sokhna in the Suez Governorate.

An engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company has also started detailed engineering works for the scheme, according to the company's project development manager, Ignacio Carreras.

Carreras said Amea Power is working with a hydrogen electrolyser and ammonia licensor, which are both "tier-1 companies".

"Other contractors for the wind and solar measurement campaign are also being mandated as we speak," Carreras told MEED on the sidelines of the ongoing World Hydrogen Mena summit in Dubai.

Amea Power aims to reach a financial investment decision (FID) by the first quarter of 2026. "We are progressing as planned and will have a very well-defined project ready to go for financing in the first quarter of 2025," the executive said.

The project's feasibility study was completed last year, as MEED reported.

In November, the company doubled the intended green ammonia production capacity of the project to 800,000 tonnes a year (t/y).

The proposed integrated project will involve the development of 2,000MW of renewable energy plants and 1,000MW of electrolysers to produce green hydrogen.

The project was first announced in April 2022 with an initial plan to produce 390,000 t/y of green ammonia.

The company subsequently decided to double the planned capacity and output of the project to meet market demand, with a current target to produce 800,000 t/y of green ammonia.

Amea Power signed a memorandum of understanding for the project with the General Authority for the Economic Zone of the Suez Canal, the Sovereign Fund of Egypt, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company and the New & Renewable Energy Authority in 2022.
