Iraq approves $200m for Basra plant work

11 October 2023

The Iraqi cabinet Iraq has approved a $202m budget allocation to fund the rehabilitation of a thermal power plant in Basra.

The Hartha power station had a total installed capacity of 800MW before it was damaged during the 2003 US-led invasion of the country.

The project will entail the rehabilitation of units 2 and 3 of the power plant.

MEED understands that Japan's Mitsubishi Power completed the rehabilitation of the plants Unit 1 in 2022 and Unit 4 in 2017.

The cabinet also approved augmenting the operational and maintenance budget allocations for the Ministry of Electricity.

"The purpose of this augmentation is to settle debts owed by both the public and private sectors, with each sector receiving equal consideration at 50 per cent," the Iraqi news agency reported.

In August, Iraq approved a proposal to build a new 2,000MW power plant in Basra, as MEED reported.

The power plant will be located in Basra and is “intended to bridge a power supply gap in the area”, as reported by Iraq’s Al-Forat News network.

It is understood a land plot has been allocated for the project, which is expected to receive gas feedback from the nearby West Qurna 1 and West Qurna 2 oil fields.

According to regional projects tracker MEED Projects data, oil and gas and solar photovoltaic (PV) power generation plants worth approximately $9.1bn are in the pre-execution phase in Iraq.

Planned oil and gas-fired power plants comprise 59 per cent of the estimated total.
