Jordan tenders Irbid wastewater package

10 April 2025

Water Authority Jordan (WAJ) has invited bids for a contract to build sewerage collection systems and related gravity trunk lines as part of the West Irbid wastewater network project.

Called Package 5, the project will cater to the towns of Soum and Kufr Youba.

WAJ will use part of the proceeds obtained from a combination of a loan and a grant administered by the European Bank for Reconstruction & Development (EBRD) towards the cost of the contract.

The client expects to receive bids for the contract on 5 June.

The wastewater system consists of seven pumping stations, a wastewater treatment plant, two siphons and a gravity pipeline.

The work will require corrugated high-density polyethylene pipelines of about 450 kilometres and approximately 67km of house connections.

MEED reported in June last year that WAJ had secured a financing package totalling $30m for a wastewater treatment plant project in West Irbid.

At the time, the EBRD said it had signed an agreement with Jordan’s Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation to extend a project financing package to WAJ.

The package consists of:

  • An EBRD loan of up to $19m
  • An investment grant of $8m from the UK government under the High-Impact Partnership on Climate Action
  • A €2.75m investment grant from the EU under its Neighbourhood Investment Platform

According to the EBRD, the funding will help provide essential wastewater services and connections to communities and refugees in Jordan’s West Irbid region.

“The financing will contribute to the construction of a new and efficient wastewater treatment plant in the area of West Irbid to complement the wastewater networks financed by the EBRD in 2018,” the bank said.

Once completed, the new facility will be able to treat 12,000 cubic metres a day, enhancing the quality and treatment of wastewater in the West Irbid region.
