Italy's Ansaldo Energia will supply gas turbines for a project to build an open-cycle gas turbine (OCGT) power generation plant in Abu Dhabi's Al-Dhafra region, according to industry sources.

The Dhafra OCGT plant project is being procured on a fast-track basis and is expected to have an installed capacity of 1,000MW-1,100MW.

MEED previously reported that the final negotiations for a contract to build the project are under way.

It is understood that the formal contract signing with the selected engineering, procurement and construction contractor is expected imminently.

The project client is Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (Taqa).

Industry sources told MEED last year that the Dhafra OCGT plant is designed to support the UAE's national artificial intelligence (AI) strategy, along with another power plant in Al-Nouf.

On 11 March, state utility Emirates Water & Electricity Company (Ewec) issued the request for qualifications for the 3.3GW Al-Nouf independent power project (IPP).

In January, Ewec and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) announced a 5.2GW solar photovoltaic plus 19 gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage system plant that is expected to enable 1GW of round-the-clock, "baseload" renewable power.

The 5.2GW/19GWh project is also expected to help support advancements in AI and other industrial applications.

Previous Ansaldo power plants

In 2016, Ansaldo won two contracts worth a total of about $669.7m to provide turbines for the Ibri/Sohar 3 IPP in Oman.

For each of the two plants, Ansaldo provided four gas turbines, four heat recovery steam generators, two steam turbines and six turbo generators.
