Neom plans underground substations

6 November 2024

Saudi Arabia’s Enowa, Neom’s energy, water and hydrogen subsidiary, is expected to issue the prequalification request for a contract to build three underground substations serving The Line, the 170-kilometre-long pair of parallel buildings at Neom.

The package comprises two 132-kilovolt (kV) substations and one 380kV substation, according to industry sources.

Underground substations reduce space requirements, allowing the surface area to be used for other purposes.

This development comes as the power generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure at Neom, which aims to be 100% powered by renewable energy by 2030, is gradually taking shape.

Separate bid evaluation proceedings are under way for the 1,200MW Gayal wind farm and the 800MW Shiqri solar photovoltaic project in Neom.

In September, Enowa received bids for a contract to build the planned first phase of the Duba Energy Park project in Tabuk.

The project’s first phase comprises a 300MW transportable gas turbine generator (GTG) designed to deliver emergency power to Neom. The second phase is a permanently installed 500MW facility comprising heavy-duty GTGs.

Power generated by both plants will be used for baseload operations until 2030. The plan entails converting the plants’ fuel to 100% renewable fuel or hydrogen by 2027 or 2028.

There are also plans to build a network of pumped hydropower storage and battery energy storage facilities across Neom.
