Ocior plans 1 million t/y Egypt ammonia plant

15 July 2024

Abu Dhabi/India-headquartered Ocior Energy expects the first phase of its planned integrated green ammonia production facility in Egypt to come onstream by 2028.

According to Adarsh Singh, the company's director for project development, the planned project will be developed in two phases.

Phase one will consist of a facility with a production capacity of 100,000 tonnes a year (t/y) of green ammonia and is expected to come onstream in 2028.

This capacity is expected to increase to 1 million t/y by 2030.

Ocior recently signed a framework agreement for the project located in Ain Sokhna port in Egypt's Suez Canal Economic Zone.

The company signed the agreement with The Sovereign Fund of Egypt, the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone), the New & Renewable Energy Authority and Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC).

Singh said the project has made significant progress.

"The feasibility study is complete, and land for both phases, including for solar and wind energy and the green hydrogen and green ammonia plant in SCZone, has been allocated," he told MEED.

The executive added that Egypt's SCZone is developing the midstream infrastructure, which includes desalination plants, a utility corridor and tank farms. These projects are under way.

MEED understands that EETC will develop the required transmission infrastructure to support the project.

"The technology work for the project is also advancing smoothly. After signing the framework agreement, the development work will now be accelerated to ensure the first molecule is delivered well within the projected timelines," Singh said.
