Indian contracting company VA Tech Wabag has secured an engineering and procurement (EP) contract worth $33.5m from China’s Sepco 3 for a 20 million-litre-a-day (MLD) industrial wastewater treatment plant (IWWTP) at the Ras Tanura refinery complex in Saudi Arabia.

VA Tech Wabag will serve as the process and technology contractor for the plant, which is being constructed by China’s Sepco 3.

Miahona Company, a Saudi-based public-private partnership developer and operator of water and wastewater projects, is developing the project. Saudi Aramco is the offtaker of the water treated and produced at the plant.

According to VA Tech Wabag, the EP scope of work under the order includes the design, engineering, procurement, supply and supervision of the installation and commissioning of the IWWTP scheme.

The plant will treat desalter effluent, tank farms and other oily wastewater sumps in the refinery.

The contract duration is 20 months.

The plant will employ biological treatment followed by filtration and a reverse osmosis technology-based process to treat the effluent for reuse in the refinery.

The treatment scheme also includes wet air oxidation to treat spent caustic effluent, according to VA Tech Wabag.
