TotalEnergies wins 300MW Oman wind and solar schemes

13 December 2024

State-backed Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) has signed project agreements with France's TotalEnergies and Oman's OQ Alternative Energy for the development of two wind farm projects, which each have a capacity of 100MW, and a 100MW solar project.

PDO will purchase the electricity from the plants through long-term power-purchase agreements (PPA) with the developer team, whose 49% shares TotalEnergies owns, and the rest by OQ Alternative Energy.

The Riyah-1 and Riyah-2 wind power plants will be located in Amin and West Nimr fields in southern Oman, while the North Solar project will be located in northern Oman.

According to TotalEnergies, the construction of the projects will start in 2025, with electricity production expected to start in 2026.

PDO’s 2023 Sustainability Report, released in June this year, confirmed that bid evaluations were under way for the three projects.

The projects support the sultanate's target for 30% of its power capacity to come from renewable sources by 2026 and 50% by 2030.

PDO floated the request for proposal documents for Riyah-1 and Riyah-2 in April 2023.

The North Solar IPP, on the other hand, will use a photovoltaic (PV) single-axis tracking system.

The plant will be located close to Saih Nihayda, next to Qarn Alam airport, in the northern region of Oman, approximately 170 kilometres south of Nizwa.
