Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) and a consortium of the local Orascom Construction, French firm Colas Rail and South Korea's Hitachi Rail have signed an €800m ($885m) contract to modernise Cairo Metro's Line 1.

According to an official statement, Colas Rail and Orascom Construction's scope of work covers modernising the electric power supply, catenary and electromechanical systems in stations, tunnels and on the rail track, as well as related civil works.

Hitachi Rail will modernise the signalling, control and telecommunications infrastructure.

Construction work will start in October and is set for completion in 2029.

The European Bank for Reconstruction & Development, the European Investment Bank and L’Agence Francaise de Developpement are funding the project.

In September 2023, the NAT signed up the French-Egyptian consortium of Colas Rail and Orascom Construction for a €1.3bn ($1.39 bn) contract to build a metro system in Alexandria.

Prior to that, Orascom and Colas Rail previously collaborated on the third phase of Cairo Metro’s Line 3 project.

A consortium of Thales and Orascom Construction also won a $367m contract in September last year from Egyptian National Railways to modernise and upgrade the Cairo-Beni Suef railway corridor.

The scope of the contract includes upgrading the signalling system and tracks across 125 kilometres and upgrading the electronic interlocking systems at the stations. These enhancements are being undertaken to increase train speeds and improve the safety and efficiency of the rail line.
