SWA evaluates Ras Al-Khair desalination plant bids

30 September 2024

Saudi Water Authority (SWA), the kingdom's main producer of desalinated water, has received bids for a contract to build a new seawater desalination plant in Ras Al-Khair in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province.

The contract covers the construction of a seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) plant with a capacity of about 600,000 cubic metres a day (cm/d).

According to sources familiar with the project, the following companies submitted proposals for the contract:

  • Abengoa (Spain) / Civil Works Company (local)
  • VA Tech Wabag (India)
  • Saudi Services for Electro Mechanic Works (SSEM, local)
  • Mutlaq Al-Ghowairi Contracting (local)
  • Al-Rashid Trading & Contracting (local)

The contract to build the Ras Al-Khair desalination plant is the third SWRO facility recently tendered by SWA, formerly known as Saline Water Conversion Company.

Earlier in September, India's VA Tech Wabag confirmed it had won the contract to build the 300,000 cm/d SWRO  plant project in Yanbu.

The value of the contract for the Yanbu 5 SWRO plant is $317m. It covers the design, engineering, supply, construction and commissioning of the desalination plant.

The client is also expected to award another contract imminently for the construction of the Shoaiba 6 SWRO facility on the kingdom's western coast, sources said.

The Shoaiba 6 SWRO plant has a capacity of 545,000 cm/d.

SWA is also procuring a fourth project in Jubail with a capacity of 600,000 cm/d.
