Spark signs water supply deal

13 September 2023

Saudi Arabia’s Spark Utilities has signed a 25-year water supply agreement with Water Transmission and Technologies Company (WTTCO).

The agreement will enable Spark Utilities to supply potable water to the King Salman Energy Park (Spark) from its seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) plant.

The agreement supports Spark’s commitment “to deliver a seamless experience to tenants looking to localise and establish operations in the heart of the energy market by providing a one-stop shop for water, gas, and electricity needs”, the company said.

Located between Dammam and Al-Ahsa, the Spark industrial complex project was inaugurated in 2018. State-backed Saudi Aramco is the project's developer and anchor tenant.

A wholly-owned subsidiary of Spark, Spark Utilities is the third company in Saudi Arabia to have been awarded a license to distribute and sell power by the Water and Electricity Regulatory Authority (Wera).

WTTCO is a spin-off from the Saline Water Conversion Corporation, the world’s largest producer of desalinated water.

In addition to managing and operating water transmission and dispatch systems, WTTCO  is the main client for new water transmission pipeline projects in the kingdom.

It is planning an SR25bn ($6.7bn) new water transmission programme as part of plans to improve potable water delivery to meet future demand, MEED reported in May this year.

WTTCO has recently tendered three major projects, estimated to total SR13bn, covering installing more than 1,200 kilometres of wide-diameter transmission pipe from desalination complexes on the coast to interior towns and cities.
