Indian firm to complete Saudi gas project this year

Indian contractor Larsen & Toubro Energy Hydrocarbon (LTEH) expects to complete work on the main contract for the Industrial Gas Hub (IGH) network project in Saudi Arabia before the end of the year, according to industry sources.

The project is being developed in Saudi Arabia’s eastern province of Jubail and involves civil, mechanical, and electrical (CME) works.

LTEH was awarded the 22-month contract in August 2021. At the time, the contractor did not reveal the deal's precise value, saying only that it was “significant”, a term LTEH uses to describe contracts in the $135m-$338m range. Industry sources have since said the contract is worth $240m.

The project is being developed by US-based Air Products, which trades industrial gases and chemicals.

The scope of work includes:

  • Construction of a steam methane reformer (SMR) for producing hydrogen
  • Construction of an air separation unit (ASU) for producing oxygen and nitrogen
  • Construction of hydrogen pressure swing adsorption (PSA) units to recover hydrogen from off-gases
  • Construction of a hydrogen fuelling station
  • Installation of pipeline networks

Industrial gases – the gaseous materials manufactured for use in industry – mainly comprise nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, argon, hydrogen, helium and acetylene.

They are used in a range of sectors including oil and gas, power, mining, steelmaking, biotechnology and fertilisers.
