Saudi Arabia reviews Riyadh East sewerage project

3 February 2025

Relevant stakeholders in Saudi Arabia's water sector are understood to be reviewing a plan to develop a new independent sewage treatment plant (ISTP) in Riyadh.

The planned Riyadh East ISTP is expected to have a capacity of 200,000 cubic metres a day (cm/d), and is one of seven ISTP schemes that the state water offtaker, Saudi Water Partnership Company (SWPC), plans to procure between 2024 and 2026.

"Real estate prices in Riyadh have increased dramatically, so I believe they are looking at either developing and building the ISTP underground or moving the location outside of Riyadh," a source familiar with the plan told MEED.

It is understood that a final decision has not yet been made.

Several underground sewage treatment plants are operating outside Saudi Arabia.

South Korea commissioned its largest underground wastewater treatment plant in 2016. The Bakdal wastewater treatment plant, also known as the Saemul Park plant, is situated under a recreational space.

In early January, SWPC invited firms to bid for the contracts to develop and operate two ISTP projects in the kingdom.

Located in Mecca, the first scheme, Arana ISTP, will have an initial capacity of 250,000 cm/d, expandable to 500,000 cm/d.

The second scheme, Hadda ISTP, will also be located in Mecca and will have an initial capacity of 100,000 cm/d, expandable to 250,000 cm/d.

SWPC expects to receive bids for the contracts by 5 May.
