The Public Investment Fund (PIF)-backed gigaproject developer Roshn has announced plans to build a new stadium in Riyadh.

The planned facility will have the capacity to accommodate 45,000 spectators and will span an area of over 450,000 square metres (sq m).

Roshn did not reveal the exact location, but said the stadium would be built in the southwest of Riyadh.

Khalid Johar, acting CEO of Roshn, said: “Roshn Stadium embodies the firm’s strategic transformation as a multi-asset class developer. The project will improve the quality of life and support economic growth in line with Saudi Vision 2030 while providing a venue in Riyadh and enhancing the kingdom’s attractiveness to host international events and sporting competitions.”

The news followed the announcement of another project to construct a new stadium to the north of Riyadh.

Earlier this week, Saudi Arabia’s Sports Ministry and the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) announced plans to build a new stadium in the north of Riyadh, next to King Abdulaziz Park.

The new stadium will be known as King Salman Stadium and will serve as the Saudi national football team’s main headquarters.

The stadium will cover an area of about 660,000 sq m and have a seating capacity of 92,000 spectators.

The construction of the stadium is expected to be completed by 2029.

This announcement was followed by the unveiling of designs for the New Murabba Stadium by the PIF-backed New Murabba Development Company.

The project, which will have the capacity to accommodate 45,000 spectators, will be built in Riyadh's New Murabba downtown development.

The new stadium is expected to be completed by 2032.

Earlier this week, Saudi Arabia officially submitted its bid to host the Fifa World Cup 2034.
