Oman prepares to announce Muscat Metro project

13 January 2026

Oman is expected to announce the launch of the Muscat Metro project “within the next couple of months”, according to the country’s Transport, Communications & Information Technology Ministry (MTCIT).

The announcement was made by Saeed Bin Hamoud Bin Saeed Al-Maawali, Omani minister of transport, communications and information technology, during the ministry’s annual media meeting.

Al-Maawali added that the announcement would follow the “signing of a national transport-tracking initiative” and mark a key milestone in the sultanate’s long-term infrastructure strategy.

According to local media reports, the project’s feasibility studies were completed in 2024.

The proposed Muscat Metro project is expected to stretch 55 kilometres and have 42 stations. The project is anticipated to cost about RO1bn ($2.6bn).

In 2023, Oman invited firms to prepare a pre-feasibility outline for the first phase of its planned Muscat Metro network. The project has long been discussed, and the tender for the preliminary consultancy work is a major step, signalling the government’s ambition to deliver it.

Work has already started on another study for Muscat. In 2021, a consortium including F&M Middle East, Broadway Malyan and Cundall was appointed to deliver the Greater Muscat Structural Plan for the Ministry of Housing & Urban Planning.
