Neom seeks firms for battery project

3 June 2024

Saudi gigaproject developer Neom plans to procure a pilot battery energy storage system project, according to a source familiar with the scheme.

MEED understands Neom has invited companies to express interest in a small facility with a capacity of 21 megawatt-hours.

The long-duration energy storage pilot project will be located at Oxagon, the Neom development's industrial cluster.

Neom has prioritised developing a pumped hydropower storage (PHS) network to store energy at the SR1.5tn ($500bn) development.

Neom energy and utility subsidiary Enowa issued the prequalification request for the PHS project, known as Nestor, in January.

The planned first phase of Neom’s PHS project will have an installed capacity of 2,200MW and a storage capacity of 23.1 gigawatt-hours, or about 11 hours, according to industry sources.
