McDermott wins key offshore decommissioning job in Qatar

3 February 2026

QatarEnergy has awarded US-based McDermott International a decommissioning definition engineering contract under Qatar’s inaugural offshore decommissioning initiative.

Under the contract scope, McDermott will develop a comprehensive technical and commercial framework and conduct detailed techno-economic studies to ensure the safe and systematic retirement and removal of 27 ageing offshore platforms.

This encompasses all associated subsea infrastructure – including subsea cables and pipelines – located in the Al-Karkara, Idd El-Shargi and Maydan Mahzam offshore oil and gas fields.

Definition engineering will start immediately and be led from McDermott’s office in Doha, the Houston-headquartered contractor said in a statement.

“Leveraging its deep knowledge of these assets and global expertise in strategic offshore decommissioning, McDermott will deliver a solution that prioritises safety, efficiency and environmental responsibility,” McDermott added.

The decommissioning definition engineering job is McDermott’s latest contract win in Qatar in recent weeks.

In early January, MEED reported that QatarEnergy had awarded McDermott a contract for the engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) of four offshore jackets and associated units at the giant North Field gas reserve in Qatari waters.

The contract, valued at around $200m, is part of the wider North Field West project – the next expansion phase of QatarEnergy’s mammoth North Field liquefied natural gas (LNG) expansion programme. The new jackets to be installed will boost gas production from the North Field reservoirs, providing additional gas feedstock for the North Field West LNG project.
