Larsen & Toubro wins Saudi HVDC links contract
25 September 2024
Mumbai-listed contracting firm Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has won a contract to build 500 kilovolt (kV) high-voltage, direct current (HVDC) transmission links in Saudi Arabia.
The company did not disclose the location and the client for the contract in a bourse filing dated 24 September.
The contract supports Saudi Arabia's national electricity network, which is being interconnected through HVDC links to "enable [the] exchange of power between regions and enhance system resilience".
L&T said it has also won orders for three more packages involving two 380kV overhead transmission lines and a bulk supply 380kV gas-insulated substation in Saudi Arabia.
HVDC infrastructure
In July last year, L&T announced that it had won a contract to construct a 525kV HVDC transmission link in Saudi Arabia.
The link is part of a large-capacity voltage source converter-based HVDC system that connects Oxagon, also known as Neom Industrial City, and Yanbu in western Saudi Arabia.
Around the same time last year, local firm Electrical Transmission Line Contracting (Aetcon) won a $155m contract to construct an HVDC transmission line between Yanbu and Neom as part of the Saudi Neom-Yanbu 525kV HVDC transmission line construction project.
South Korea's Hyundai Engineering & Construction (Hyundai E&C) also won a $145m contract to construct an HVDC transmission line in Saudi Arabia as part of the same scheme.
UAE contract
In its 24 September filing, L&T also indicated it has won a new order to build two major 400kV gas-insulated substations in Abu Dhabi.
The company said in addition to civil works, the scope of the contract involves a series of current-limiting reactors; auto transformers; related control, protection, substation monitoring and alarm systems, including fault and power quality monitoring; telecommunication systems; and integration with the load dispatch centre.
