Kuwait Oil Company awards renewables and hydrogen advisory contract

22 July 2024

Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) has awarded US-headquartered KBR an advisory consulting contract to develop a country-wide masterplan for the production of 17GW of renewables and 25GW of green hydrogen by 2050.

The 18-month contract will involve developing a market analysis and the techno-commercial feasibility studies, as well the training of Kuwaiti nationals.

KBR will provide advisory consulting services to develop a phased strategy for the deployment of significant wind and solar power, combined with power storage capability, KBR said in a statement on 18 July.

The renewable power capability will be linked to the production of green hydrogen for internal industrial use, as well as for export purposes.

“We are excited to be a part of this significant national-level strategy in Kuwait, as we continue to grow our presence in the country,” said Jay Ibrahim, KBR president for sustainable technology solutions.

The planned renewables project is the largest to be announced in Kuwait to date, while the green hydrogen project is the first.

In May, KOC signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Electricity, Water & Renewable Energy to connect the renewable energy plants it intends to build to Kuwait's national electricity grid.

KOC intends to build solar and wind farms with a capacity of 1,000MW, the firm said in a statement.

It also aims to form a joint working team tasked with developing concepts and plans to implement the energy transition strategy and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

The procurement process is under way for Kuwait's first utility-scale solar photovoltaic project to be developed in partnership with the private sector.
