A team comprising the local contractors Al Bawani and Water & Environment Technologies Company (Wetico) has been selected for a contract to build a water and sewage treatment complex at Saudi Arabia's King Salman Park in Riyadh.

The overall project entails constructing a sewage treatment plant with a design capacity of 29,850 cubic metres a day (cm/d) and a treated sewage effluent (TSE) facility with a capacity of 160,000 cm/d.

The complex will also treat approximately 40,700 cm/d of water from the National Water Company.

In addition to these core facilities, the contract involves the construction of storage tanks for the TSE, brine and treated water, which will have a total combined volume of 491,226 cubic metres.

According to regional projects tracker MEED Projects, the contract is estimated to be worth more than $500m.

Covering an area of 16.9 square kilometres, King Salman Park is located south of King Abdullah Road, north of Makkah Al Mukkarramah Road and west of the Eastern Ring Road in Riyadh.

Once completed, it is expected to become the world’s largest urban park. It will have 12 kilometres of green space and over 150 attractions, with 10 million square metres of built-up area. There will also be 18,000 car parking spaces.

In June last year, King Salman Park Foundation awarded two contracts totalling nearly $2.5bn for landscaping work.

It awarded the larger contract, worth $2bn, to the local Nesma & Partners and the other contract, worth $330m, to another Riyadh-based contractor, Al Rashid Trading & Contracting Company.
