Qatar’s Kahramaa awards $274m cables contract

15 July 2024

Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has awarded Elsewedy Cables Qatar an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract worth more than QR1bn ($274m).

The contract involves providing EPC services, including supplying and installing 132-kilovolt (kV) power cables for strategic projects, Elsewedy Cables Qatar’s parent firm, Aamal Company, said in a filing with the Qatar Stock Exchange.

The contract duration is three years.

In February, the state utility awarded a similar-sized contract to Elsewedy Cables Qatar.

Valued at QR1.2bn ($330m), the contract it won in February involves the supply of low- and medium-voltage cables.

The 30-month contract will cater to a planned new underground extra-high-voltage/high-voltage (EHV/HV) cables network, in addition to variable voltage levels starting from 123 kilovolts (kV) and 66kV, as well as modifications to the existing circuits.

Elsewedy Cables Qatar is a subsidiary of Senyar Industries Qatar Holding, where Aamal Company is a 50% shareholder.

In January, MEED reported that Qatar’s peak electricity demand has grown by an average compounded rate of 4.52% annually between 2018 and 2022.
