Joint venture wins Egypt water treatment plant deal

1 September 2026

A joint venture of Hassan Allam Construction and MetiPro has been awarded the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the Masharif water purification plant in Alexandria, Egypt.

The scope of work includes raw-water intake, sedimentation and clarification, filtration, treated-water systems, sludge handling and chemical dosing.

Both companies are subsidiaries of Hassan Allam Holding following the group’s acquisition of MetiPro, formerly the EPC arm of UAE-headquartered Metito group.

The plant will have a treatment capacity of 175,000 cubic metres a day and will produce drinking water from Nile River supplies.

The facility will include two large rapid-gravity sand filters and a dual-compartment reservoir system. It will also feature automated sludge dewatering and a centralised SCADA/PLC control system.

Hassan Allam said the project presents engineering and construction challenges because it is located between two major waterways. The works will also require extensive foundations and the construction of hydraulic structures and treatment facilities.

As MEED understands, the plant is being developed in the Masharif Al-Amreya area, a major government-led urban development in western Alexandria. The development covers about 1,550 feddans and includes residential and infrastructure projects.

The Egyptian government previously identified the Ministry of Housing, Utilities & Urban Communities as one of the government bodies involved in planning and developing infrastructure for the area.

In June 2025, a joint venture of Hassan Allam Construction and Metito Utilities was awarded the EPC contract for the Alexandria West wastewater treatment plant extension and upgrade project.

That project involves upgrading an existing wastewater plant to secondary treatment and increasing its capacity to 600,000 cubic metres a day.

It will support the depollution of Lake Maryout and the Mediterranean Sea, with commissioning targeted for 2029.
