JinkoSolar wins 1GW Neom hydrogen contract

8 July 2024

India's Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has awarded China-headquartered JinkoSolar a contract to supply 1,000MW of solar modules for the Neom green hydrogen project in Saudi Arabia.

The project will integrate up to 4,000MW of solar and wind energy to produce up to 600 tonnes a day of carbon-free hydrogen, which will be converted into ammonia.

Located in Neom's Oxagon industrial city, the project is being implemented by Neom Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC) owned equally by Neom, Saudi utility developer Acwa Power and US firm Air Products.

JinkoSolar will supply 1,000MW of its advanced Tiger Neo N-Type TOPCon modules to NGHC.

India's Larsen & Toubro is the sub-EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contractor for the renewable energy components of the project.

The Indian contracting firm's scope covers the construction of a 2,930MW solar power generation plant, a 1,370MW wind power farm and a 400MW battery energy storage system, according to a source familiar with the plan.

The package also includes a power transmission network extending 190 kilometres.

The planned wind and solar power plants are located in northwest Saudi Arabia, close to the border with Jordan.

Financial close

In May 2023, NGHC achieved full financial close for the Neom green hydrogen project at a total investment value of $8.4bn, including $6.1bn in non-recourse financing from 23 local, regional and international banks and financial institutions.

Following this, NGHC awarded Air Products the $6.7bn EPC contract.

NGHC also secured an exclusive 30-year off-take agreement with Air Products for all the green ammonia produced at the facility, which will unlock the economic potential of renewable energy across the entire value chain.
