Jera to explore clean energy with UAE and Saudi entities

27 July 2023

Japan’s biggest power generator Jera has signed agreements with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) to explore clean energy opportunities.

Jera’s strategic collaboration agreement with Adnoc, signed on 17 July, relates to cooperation in identifying opportunities in the fields of green hydrogen and ammonia.

Jera and Adnoc have a business relationship centred on sales of liquefied natural gas cargoes to the Japanese firm.

The two companies have previously conducted feasibility assessments in the hydrogen and ammonia fields.

Separately, Jera has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with PIF to explore opportunities to develop green hydrogen projects and derivatives.

The MoU paves the way for the two parties to begin feasibility studies for the potential development of green hydrogen and derivatives projects that would support domestic and international markets, the Japanese company said in a statement.

Jera has existing gas-fired power and desalination projects in the GCC region and is actively prospecting with potential partners in the Middle East to expand its development of decarbonisation projects.

Jera established a subsidiary in Dubai to oversee the firm’s Middle East operations, as MEED reported in October last year.

According to the company, the Middle East region’s rich renewable energy resources make it a promising production base for green hydrogen and ammonia.
