A joint venture of Japan’s IHI Corporation and Kuwait’s Heavy Engineering Industries & Shipbuilding Company (Heisco) has received a letter of award for a contract to upgrade key equipment at the 2,400MW Doha West power generation plant.
The state’s Central Agency for Public Tenders, on behalf of the Ministry of Electricity, Water & Renewable Energy (Mewre), is understood to have approved the award of the contract, worth KD173.18m ($566m), in July, as MEED reported.
According to a source familiar with the project, the letter of award has been issued and the contractors expect to sign the contract with the ministry by the end of November.
Led by IHI, the joint venture will develop and upgrade eight steam boilers, the thermal units control system and the auxiliary system at the Doha West distillation station.
MEED understands that Japan’s Mitsubishi Power rehabilitated the eight steam turbines and generators at the Doha West plant between 2015 and 2019.
Located in Al-Asimah in Kuwait, the Doha West power plant was commissioned in 1982.
According to GlobalData, DL Holdings, Hyundai Engineering and Tractebel Engineering were selected to provide engineering procurement construction services for the oil-fired power project. Mitsubishi Power was chosen as the turbine supplier for the project.
