Egypt to procure $200m substation packages

London-headquartered European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has issued a general procurement notice for a substation and an overhead transmission line project in Egypt.

The upcoming tenders involve the construction of a 500-kilovolt (kV) substation in the capital, Cairo, and the construction of a 500kV overhead transmission line in Ektsadiya

The upcoming tenders follow the approval of a loan and grant administered by the EBRD for the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), the country's electricity transmission operator.

The project funding consists of a $165m EBRD loan and a separate $35m from the EU Neighbourhood Investment Platform.

According to EBRD, it agreed to provide a sovereign loan of up to €170m ($178m) consisting of two tranches –  a committed first tranche of up to €63.75m and an uncommitted second tranche of up to €106.25m in favour of EETC.

The projects form part of Egypt's Nexus Water, Food & Energy (NFWE) grid reinforcement initiative.

EBRD said the construction of a 500kV substation in the Cairo governorate is crucial for the stability of the network and is directly linked to the closing of a gas-powered power plant known as Shoubra El-Kheima as part of the energy pillar of the NWFE initiative.
