Egypt invites Helwan wastewater prequalifications

Egypt's Construction Authority for Potable Water and Wastewater (CAPW) has extended to 29 January the submission deadline for prequalification applications for a contract to design, build, operate and maintain the planned extension of the Helwan wastewater treatment plant.  

The project to expand and upgrade the Helwan WWTP  is expected to bring environmental and public health benefits to Cairo's Helwan area through the sustainable disposal or utilisation of effluent and sludge, which will improve water quality and reduce pollution.

The project aims to increase the capacity of the Helwan WWTP from 550,000 cubic metres a day (cm/d)  to 800,000 cm/d.

The project will also contribute to job creation.

The European Investment Bank (EIB), Agence Francaise de Developpement (AFD) and the EU are providing project financing.

The Helwan WWTP extension and upgrade project will utilise the design-build-operate-maintain model. 

It was earlier reported that EIB approved a loan of €166m ($182m) to finance the project, which has an estimated total cost of $316m.
