Dubai to revisit Downtown Jumeira masterplan
1 March 2023
Dubai Holding is expected to tender a contract to review and update the masterplan for the Downtown Jumeira development during the summer of this year.
The Downtown Jumeira project was announced in 2019. The plans involve developing real estate on the Police Academy site alongside Sheikh Zayed Road opposite Mall of the Emirates in the Al-Sufouh area.
The original masterplan included a 550-metre-tall tower called Burj Jumeira. The tower has been designed to reflect the ripples of desert sand dunes and the façade will be covered with digital displays.
At the top of the building, there will be a 450-metre-high area known as The Crown. It will have a sky lounge and interconnected sky restaurant, providing an opportunity to host larger-scale events. There will also be several observation decks from where visitors can take part in extreme sports.
The base of the tower is designed in the outline of Sheikh Mohammed’s fingerprint and is planned to accommodate various social, cultural, and artistic events and activities. It will include water fountains and a terraced outdoor amphitheatre and is designed to host interactive lighting and firework displays. A retail area will be built around the tower.
The broader Downtown Jumeira district will include a mix of residential and commercial towers and hotels.
It will have covered pathways connecting to Sharaf DG Metro Station and the Burj al-Arab area.
The Downtown Jumeira scheme replaced the previous Jumeirah Central development. Dubai Holding said in October 2017 that plans for the Jumeirah Central development had been put on hold as it focuses on other projects such as Marsa al-Arab.
At least two earlier projects had also been planned for the Police Academy site. These included the world’s biggest shopping centre, known as Mall of the World, and a largely residential district known as Jumeirah Hills.
