Dewa tenders 132kV substation package

11 March 2024

State utility Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (Dewa) has invited companies to bid for a 132-kilovolt (kV) substation package.

The project scope covers the supply, installation and commissioning of 132kV cable works for network reinforcement, modification, overhead lines and remote end works.

It also includes two shunt reactors at two separate 132/11kV substations.

The project tender bond is AED7m ($1.9m). Dewa expects to receive bids for the contract by 30 April.

Earlier this year, Dewa's managing director and chief executive Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer said that Dewa had commissioned 1,414 11kV distribution substations across Dubai in 2023.

This takes the total number of medium-voltage substations – 11kV and 6.6kV – in the emirate to 44,015 by the end of last year.

Dewa reported a 5.5% increase in electricity demand in 2022, to reach 53,180 gigawatt-hours.

This is half of the 10% growth recorded in 2021, which marked the emirate’s resurgence from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dubai's renewable energy capacity, mainly from solar power plants, sits at 2,863MW, following the inauguration of the $4.34bn fourth phase of Mohammed bin Rashid Solar Park in Dubai in December.

The state utility's total installed capacity is estimated to be over 15GW.
