Contractor wins Bahrain 72MW solar scheme

Bahrain’s Ministry of Electricity & Water Authority has awarded Deft Contractors the contract to build, own, operate and maintain grid-tied solar photovoltaic (PV) power panels with a minimum capacity of 72MW in Sakhir in the south of the kingdom.

Ewa received seven bids for the contract, as MEED reported in January.

The ministry announced the signing of the project agreements on 15 August.

The other bidders and their levelised electricity cost offers a kilowatt-hour (kWh) are:

  • Alpha Energy (US): BD0.016
  • Tarsheed Energy (local): BD0.018
  • Oak Energy & Infrastructure (local): BD0.018
  • Yellow Door Energy (UAE): BD0.0179
  • Green Innova Trading (local) BD0.021
  • Safeer for Renewable Energy (Saudi Arabia): BD0.025

The power plant will be located at multiple premises, including­ at the Bahrain International Circuit, the University of Bahrain, the Bahrain International Exhibition & Convention Centre and the Al-Dana Amphitheatre.

The solar panels are to be built on the rooftops, car park shades, electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and grounds of these organisations’ facilities.

It is understood the operation and maintenance contract is for 20 years.

The project is in line with Bahrain’s broader vision to adopt a circular carbon economy, with the aim of bringing carbon emissions to net zero by 2060, according to the country’s Minister of Electricity & Water Affairs Yasser bin Ebrahim Humaidan.
