Saudi firm Shibh Al-Jazira Contracting has started construction works on a road project that connects Taif Road in the Laban neighbourhood of Riyadh to the Qiddiya project.

The road has a total length of 16 kilometres (km) and is part of the first phase of the Royal Commission for Riyadh City's (RCRC) programme to develop the city’s road network.

Earlier this month, RCRC confirmed that it has awarded four contracts worth SR13bn ($3.46 bn) as part of the first phase of the programme.

RCRC said that the programme’s first phase will develop the axis of the main and ring roads to improve traffic movement in the city.

RCRC said that the first project involves the construction of a second southern ring road, which will be 56km long and will run from the new Al-Kharj Road in the east to Jeddah Road in the west.

The second project confirmed by RCRC is a SR4bn ($1bn) design-and-build contract awarded for the upgrade of the Wadi Laban cable bridge in Riyadh.

The third project involves developing the western part of the Al-Thumama Road Axis, which is 6km long and extends from King Khalid Road in the west to King Fahd Road in the east.

Planning for growth

The RCRC’s major projects include Riyadh Metro, Riyadh Art, Sports Boulevard, King Salman International Park, Green Riyadh and the Diriyah Gate project.

In November 2023, Riyadh was selected to host the Expo 2030 event.

Saudi Arabia plans to invest $7.8bn in Expo 2030. The figure was revealed in June last year at the 172nd general assembly of the expo organising body, the Bureau International des Expositions, in Paris.
