Riyadh-based construction firm Safari Company has commenced construction on Concourse A of Terminal 1 at Riyadh’s King Khalid International airport (KKIA).

MEED understands that Riyadh Airports Company awarded the estimated SR400m ($107m) contract in Q2 2025.

The Concourse A expansion project aims to enhance the operational capacity and efficiency of Terminal 1. It is expected to increase Terminal 1’s capacity by more than 2.7 million passengers a year.

The project is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2027.

Canadian engineering firm WSP is the project consultant.

In January, Riyadh completed the expansion works and commenced operations at Terminal 1 of the expanded international passenger terminals at KKIA.

The expansion increased the airport’s capacity, aligning with the National Strategy for Transport and Logistics and Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.

A joint venture of Turkey’s IC Ictas Construction and local firm Al-Rashid Trading & Contracting is carrying out the expansion works on international terminals 1 and 3.

Construction began in mid-2023 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

The joint venture also renovated terminals 3 and 4 at the airport.

GlobalData expects Saudi Arabia’s construction industry to record an annual average growth of 5.2% from 2025 to 2028, supported by the government’s focus on boosting tourism, coupled with investments in commercial, energy, housing and infrastructure projects.

The infrastructure construction sector is expected to grow by 5.2% in real terms in 2024, before recording an annual average growth rate of 6% between 2025 and 2028, supported by public and private sector investments in road and rail infrastructure projects.
