BP and PetroChina award new contracts in Iraq

16 February 2023

The Turkish engineering and construction company Tekfen has signed several new contracts with Basra Energy Company (BECL), a joint venture of UK-based BP and Beijing’s PetroChina.

The contracts cover general construction services and the installation of flowlines at Iraq’s Rumaila field, according to industry sources.

The contracts run for four years and collectively are worth more than $100m.

Flowlines connect single wellheads to manifolds or process equipment. They are used at onshore and offshore fields and can be located either on the surface or subsurface. Multiple flowlines connect individual wells to a manifold in large oil and gas fields.

A gathering line transfers the flow from the manifold to a pre-processing stage or a transportation facility or vessel.

BECL operates the Rumaila field through an existing technical service contract, which will expire at the end of 2034.

Since 1 June 2022, BECL has owned and managed the interests of BP and PetroChina in the Rumaila field.

Along with PetroChina and BP, the Iraqi state-owned Basra Oil Company (BOC) and the state-owned oil marketing company Somo are also shareholders of BECL.

The Rumaila oil field is located in southern Iraq, 32 kilometres from the Kuwaiti border. It is Iraq’s largest oil field and is estimated to contain 17 billion barrels, about 12 per cent of the country’s oil reserves.

Licensing round

Iraq is pushing to increase the production of oil and gas as European nations seek alternatives to imports from Russia.

Earlier this month, Iraq awarded six oil concessions to two UAE and Chinese companies as part of the country’s fifth licensing round.

UAE-based Crescent Petroleum, the Middle East’s largest private upstream oil and gas company, won three production and development concessions.

One of the concessions awarded to Crescent Petroleum is located in Iraq’s Basra governorate. The two other concessions are located in Iraq’s Diyala Governorate.

Two concessions were awarded to Geo-Jade Petroleum, a Chinese real estate development and oil exploration and production company. One of the concessions awarded to Geo-Jade is located in Basra and the other is located in Diyala.
