Amazon Web Services and e& sign $1bn deal

16 October 2024

Amazon Web Services (AWS), a division of the US-based technology and e-commerce firm, has signed a $1bn agreement with UAE-headquartered telecommunications and data services provider e&.

The six-year agreement focuses on delivering core cloud services like storage, computing, networking, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning.

According to an official statement, the agreement "enables e& to leverage AWS’s 200-plus … services to modernise platforms such as Starzplay Arabia, a TV streaming service; and Careem, a platform offering easy access to food, mobility and digital payments".

The agreement with AWS will enable hundreds of small to medium-sized businesses to access the AWS Marketplace, a digital catalogue of software running on AWS.

In August 2022, AWS unveiled plans to invest AED20bn ($5bn) in its data infrastructure in the UAE over the next 15 years.

AWS estimates that its projected spending on the construction and operation of the new AWS Middle East (UAE) region, which comprises three availability zones, will support an average of “nearly 6,000 full-time jobs annually at external vendors, with a planned AED20bn ($5bn) investment in the local economy through 2036”.

The planned 15-year investment includes capital expenditures on the construction of data centres, operational expenses related to ongoing utilities and facility costs, and purchases of goods and services from regional businesses.

AWS’s UAE data centres are located in Abu Dhabi.
