Alghanim submits lowest bid for Kuwait power project

Kuwait-based Alghanim International General Trading & Contracting has submitted the lowest bid for a tender to provide engineering services at the Subiya power and water distillation plant in Kuwait.

Under the terms of the project, the successful bidder will provide engineering services to open-cycle gas turbines at the facility.

The bidders and their prices are:

  • Alghanim International General Trading & Contracting: KD87,280,000 ($286m)
  • Al-Daw Engineering General Trading & Contracting: KD92,398,000 ($303m)
  • Al-Zain United General Trading & Contracting: KD95,318,378 ($312m)

Alghanim has previously represented US-based GE on power projects in Kuwait, while Al-Daw has represented South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries on projects in the country.

The tender was issued on 27 April 2025 with a bid submission deadline of 20 July 2025.

The contractor will support the supply, installation, operation and maintenance project to convert the 250MW second phase of the Subiya power station from open-cycle gas turbines (OCGT) to combined-cycle gas turbines (CCGT).

The Subiya power and water distillation plant is the largest power and water plant in Kuwait with a power generation capacity of 7,046.7MW, accounting for 35% of the country’s installed capacity.

It has a water desalination capacity of 100 million imperial gallons a day.
