22 March 2023

Dubai-based Alec has been selected as the main contractor to build the integrated Wynn Resort on Al-Marjan Island in Ras al-Khaimah, planned by the local master developer Marjan in partnership with Rak Hospitality Holding and US-based casino and hotel operator Wynn Resorts.

The German foundation specialist Bauer International will conduct the pilling and enabling works. The firm has already started construction preparation on the project site.

MEED reported in January that Alec was competing with Lebanon’s Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC) for this contract.

“Well-known for their cross-sector capabilities and expertise in building landmark projects, the appointment of Alec Engineering & Contracting and Bauer International will ensure the timely completion of the integrated Wynn Resort, which is set to further catalyse Ras al-Khaimah’s booming tourism market,” said Marjan CEO Abdulla Abdooli.

Wynn resort

The estimated $2.5bn integrated resort development on Al-Marjan Island is the largest project of its kind in the emirate’s growing hospitality sector.

It is also expected to be one of the first to benefit from anticipated changes to legislation in the UAE covering gaming.

The project involves the construction of a 1,000-key luxury hotel, and retail and convention areas, including a high-end shopping mall, food and beverage amenities, a spa and gaming facilities.

It covers an area of 250,000 square metres and is set to open in early 2027.

US firm HKS Architects is the design consultant. The project manager is UK-based Mace.

Rak development

Ras al-Khaimah is enjoying robust growth in the real estate and tourism markets.

According to data from the Ras al-Khaimah Municipality, the demand for commercial units, commercial and residential land, and touristic land increased sharply in the first half of 2022, indicating a growing appetite for commercial real estate activity in the emirate.

Following the new gaming regulations, Rak saw several strategic hospitality and retail asset acquisitions, including Abu Dhabi’s Aldar Properties' purchase of the Rixos Bab al-Bahr hotel, the Al-Hamra Mall and the Doubletree by Hilton Resort & Spa Marjan Island.

In addition, listed firms Abu Dhabi National Hotels and Dubai Investments have made separate announcements detailing AED1bn-worth of resort and residential projects on Al-Marjan.
