Abu Dhabi opens Zayed National Museum

3 December 2025

Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture & Tourism has announced the opening of the Zayed National Museum, located in the Saadiyat Cultural District in Abu Dhabi.

The museum was formally opened to the public on 3 December.

According to an official statement: “The Zayed National Museum showcases a collection of over 1,500 objects within its six permanent galleries, combining archaeological artefacts, historic objects, audiovisual and sensory experiences, as well as contemporary installations and authentic reconstructions.”

The project was delivered by the joint venture of Belgium’s Besix and Abu Dhabi-based Trojan General Contracting.

UK-based architectural firm Foster & Partners designed the museum.

The museum spans 66,000 square metres (sq m) and comprises five towers that resemble falcon wings, inspired by their place in the UAE’s cultural heritage.

Canadian engineering firm WSP was the project’s construction supervision consultant and the consultant of record.

US-based firm Hill International was the project management consultant.

In 2010, Italy’s Swissboring completed the enabling works, the local NSCC completed the piling, and a joint venture of the local/Australian Habtoor Leighton Group and South Africa’s Murray & Roberts Contractors completed the substructure.

The project was originally unveiled as part of the Saadiyat Island masterplan in 2006. It was delayed for most of the past decade following the Abu Dhabi government’s 2011 strategic review of future projects.

According to data from the regional projects tracker MEED Projects, construction resumed in 2021 and was completed in 2025.
