Abu Dhabi forms transport company
13 March 2023
Abu Dhabi has formed Abu Dhabi Transport Company (ADTC) to implement, operate and develop transport systems in rural and urban areas across the emirate.
The company will develop rail systems and all other related services and operations, and provide integrated transport services, including the rental of vehicles and buses.
The decision could be a precursor to renewed progress on transport projects such as the long-awaited Abu Dhabi Light Rail project, often referred to as the Abu Dhabi Metro, that stalled 10 years ago in 2013 following market soundings with construction companies.
ADTC was established by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al-Nahyan in his capacity as the Ruler of Abu Dhabi.
In a statement, the government said the entity will be an affiliate of the Supreme Council for Financial and Economic Affairs, will support the emirate’s integrated transport ecosystem by developing transport systems, and will contribute to effective and sustainable transport services for citizens and residents.
The statement added that ADTC will endeavour to achieve its stated goals in collaboration with relevant government entities in Abu Dhabi.
The board of ADTC will be chaired by Sheikh Mohamed’s son, Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed.
The other board members include prominent business leaders in Abu Dhabi, including Mohamed Ali al-Shorafa, a member of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council and chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development; Muna Ali al-Dhaheri; Shadi Khalid Malak, CEO of Etihad Rail; Saeed Rashid al-Zaabi, an adviser to the chairman of the Department of Transport and board member of Abu Dhabi Airports; Talal Shafiq al-Dhiyebi, CEO of Aldar Properties; and Ahmed al-Musawa al-Hashemi, CEO of Oman-Etihad Rail.
