Saudi Arabia’s Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) has announced the start of construction works at the Al Urubah Park in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The park spans an area of about 754,000 square metres and is located at the intersection of Prince Turki Bin Abdul Aziz Al Awwal Road with Al Urubah Road.

According to RCRC, the park features a panoramic path of 3 kilometres and 12 meters high providing a view of the city’s landmarks. Also, more than 600,000 trees and shrubs will be planted, covering 65% of the park's area.

The park also features a 14 km-long walking trail, terraces, open spaces, sports facilities and theatres for various events.

The project is designed by Milan-headquartered Landscape Architecture Nature Development (Land).

Spanish engineering firm Idom is the project management consultant.

The construction work is undertaken by local contractor Al Yamama Group.

France-headquartered consultancy Egis is providing programme management and technical support services for the implementation of the Green Riyadh scheme.

Green Riyadh

Green Riyadh was launched in March 2019 by King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud as part of national efforts to further the kingdom’s Vision 2030 and also contribute to the Saudi Green Initiative goal of planting 10 billion trees within the Kingdom.

The programme aims to plant 7.5 million trees in the capital city of Riyadh and increase the city’s vegetation cover to 9%, increasing the per capita share of green space from 1.7 square meters to 28 square meters. The program also contributes to lowering the city’s temperature and improving air quality by reducing pollution and dust.

Afforestation plans for Green Riyadh include the development of 1,100 kilometres of green belts along utilities lines, 272km of valleys, 3,300 neighbourhood gardens and 43 parks across 117 neighbourhoods.

The strategy aims to boost the city’s liveability to increase the health and wellbeing of citizens.
