Iraq to develop gas import facility

10 October 2023

Iraq has decided to develop a new gas importation terminal in the port of Faw, according to a statement released by the office of Prime Minister Mohamed Shia El-Sudani.

An agreement was reached on developing the facility during a meeting chaired by the prime minister on 8 October, according to the statement.

The project will be implemented by Iraq’s Ministry of Oil, which will use funds from the federal budget.

Iraq is trying to diversify its sources of imported gas so that it is less reliant on Iranian imports.

Recently a delegation from Iraq travelled to Qatar to discuss potential gas imports.

Earlier this month, Iraq signed an agreement to import gas from Turkmenistan.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed during a visit to Baghdad by the Minister of State for Gas Affairs in Turkmenistan Maksat Babayev.

In a statement, El-Sudani said that the agreement will help meet the needs of industrial facilities and power stations in Iraq.

A delegation from Iraq is scheduled to travel to Turkmenistan on 25 October to sign contracts relating to the deal.
