Egypt chemical plant contract awarded

9 October 2023

State-owned Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (Echem) has awarded the main contract for a project to expand a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) production facility in Alexandria governorate.

Egypt-based Alexandria Petroleum Maintenance Company (Petromaint) has been appointed as the main contractor for the project, according to information first obtained by the regional project-tracking service MEED Projects.

Echem awarded the contract in August this year, with a value of $40m, according to MEED Projects.

The scope of the project includes:

  • Construction of an electrolysis unit
  • Construction of a chlorination unit
  • Construction of an ethylene dichloride (EDC) purification unit
  • Construction of additional warehouses
  • Construction of allied utilities
  • Construction of a stripping unit
  • Construction of a storage tank
  • Installation of a drier
  • Installation of silos
  • Installation of a centrifuge
  • Installation of a polymerisation reactor
  • Installation of an EDC cracker
  • Installation of related machinery

Egypt is trying to position itself as a regional energy hub, but economic issues have hampered progress on some of the country’s largest petrochemicals and energy projects.

In 2022,  a mass exodus of funds from Egypt depleted the country’s foreign currency reserves.

This has forced authorities to devalue the local currency several times, increasing the cost of imported materials and equipment for projects.
