Actis to buy 580MW Egypt wind farms

14 September 2023

UK-headquartered Actis is to acquire wind farms with a total combined capacity of 580MW in Egypt.

According to a local media report, The Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE) has reached a preliminary agreement with Actis to sell the Gabal el-Zeit wind farms for $350m.

The deal is expected to be finalised in November once Actis completes the due diligence process and obtains approval from Egypt’s New & Renewable Energy Authority.

The final value is higher than Actis’ initial offer of $300m in April, when TSFE put the power plant up for sale.

The 580MW wind farms are located in the Red Sea governorate. The Gabal el-Zeit 1 has a capacity of 240MW, while Gabal el-Zeit 2 and 3 have a capacity of 220MW and 120MW, respectively.

Hala el-Said, minister of planning and economic development, previously said that Egypt had received five offers for the stations.

MEED understands that the sale of the wind power plants is based on an energy tariff price of $cents 2.4 a kilowatt-hour (kWh), with 25 per cent to be paid in Egyptian pounds.

The buyer will also have the right to use the land for 25 years.

The latest Gabal el-Zeit wind farm was completed in 2014, according to MEED Projects data. Germany’s Siemens Gamesa was the main contractor.
