Saudi Arabia plans 50 independent water infrastructure projects

15 August 2023

State water offtaker Saudi Water Partnership Company (SWPC) plans to procure 50 independent water infrastructure projects, according to its latest Seven-Year Statement covering the years 2022-28.

The total number of planned projects to be delivered along with the private sector exceeds by three the number of schemes outlined in the previous statement covering the years 2020-26.

This implies the addition of at least eight new projects, given the successful procurement of two independent water projects (IWPs) – Jubail 3B and Rabigh 4 – and three independent sewage treatment plant (ISTP) projects – Buraydah 2, Tabuk 2 and Medina 3 – in the past 24 months.

The statement confirmed the addition of three ISTP schemes, to be located in North Riyadh, Hadda and Aranah.

It also added five new independent strategic water reservoir projects, to be located in the Eastern Province, Al-Baha, Najran and Aseer.

No new IWPs were added to the pipeline, with the procurement process for at least two of these schemes – Rabigh 4 & 6 and Ras Mohaisen – progressing slowly.

The numbers of planned small sewage treatment plant and independent water transmission pipeline projects remain unchanged in the latest statement, standing at seven and eight, respectively.

Between 2018 and 2022, SWPC has awarded contracts for several seawater reverse osmosis IWP schemes, as well as the kingdom’s first and second batches of ISTP projects.

SWPC’s role is expected to expand further as the kingdom commits to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2060 while at the same time executing Vision 2030, the Saudi Green Initiative and its circular carbon economy approach to energy transition.

The agency has also launched initiatives to comply with these objectives, as well as with the relevant global environmental, social and corporate governance principles, its CEO Khaled al-Qureshi told MEED earlier this year.
