Jera and Taqa to seek low-carbon projects

16 February 2023

Japanese utility developer and investor Jera and Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (Taqa) plan to jointly explore decarbonisation opportunities, mainly in the Middle East.

The areas of collaboration could include the joint development of zero-emission thermal power projects and other green projects, mainly in the Middle East region, according to Jera.

The companies signed and announced a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for this collaboration on 15 February.

This follows the signing in January of an MoU between Jera and Abu Dhabi clean energy company Masdar to explore collaboration opportunities in green hydrogen and renewable energy in markets of mutual interest.

Jera established a subsidiary in Dubai to oversee the firm’s Middle East operations, as MEED reported in October.

The move is expected to boost plans to develop businesses in a wide range of fields, including large-scale renewable energy projects and green fuel production projects, in addition to the existing gas-fired power and desalination projects.

Taqa and Jera collaborated on the Umm al-Nar independent water and power plant project in Abu Dhabi in 2003.

“This MoU will open up opportunities for collaboration between Taqa and Jera through the joint development of zero-emission thermal power projects and other green projects, mainly in the Middle East region, and will contribute to the expansion of business opportunities for both companies,” Jera said.

According to the company, the Middle East region’s rich renewable energy resources make it a promising production base for green hydrogen and ammonia.

Jera has recently commenced a study to co-fire ammonia in a coal-fired power plant in the Philippines.
