Jordan extends deadline for Wadi Zarqa wastewater plant

5 January 2026

Jordan’s Water Authority (WAJ) has extended the prequalification deadline for the design-build-operate (DBO) contract for phase one of the Wadi Zarqa wastewater treatment plant.

The facility will have a treatment capacity of 150,000 cubic metres a day (cm/d) by 2030.

The original bid submission deadline was 29 December. The new deadline is 2 February.

The scope includes the main treatment facilities, a 1.4MW hydropower unit, a 12-kilometre conveyance pipeline from the West Zarqa pump station to the plant, and the expansion of the pre-treatment facility at the pump station.

The prequalification notice was listed on TED, the EU’s official procurement portal, as the project is being financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB).

The project will be implemented in two phases. Phase two is planned to add a further 200,000 cm/d, bringing total capacity to 350,000 cm/d by 2034-35.

This phase remains at the planning stage and will be tendered separately at a later date.

Both local and international contractors may participate, either individually or through joint ventures of up to three members.

The Zarqa wastewater treatment plant is a separate and much larger facility than the industrial zero-liquid discharge facility that was recently inaugurated in the same governorate.

That plant, opened in September, treats 150 cubic metres of industrial wastewater a day and was developed with support from the US-backed Water Efficiency and Conservation (WEC) project and the private sector.
