Beijing-headquartered Metallurgical Construction Corporation has won a contract to undertake the steel structure works on the expansion of Medina airport in Saudi Arabia.

The scope covers work on boarding bridges, Terminal Two and the renovation of Terminal One.

The airport reported 11 million passengers in 2024, a 17% increase from the previous year. The expansion will increase the capacity to up to 17 million passengers a year by 2028.

In 2024, Turkiye’s TAV Airports and the local Al-Rajhi Holding announced plans to invest $275m to develop Medina airport amid surging passenger traffic growth.

The investment plan includes building a new terminal covering 40,000 square metres, upgrading the existing terminal, and constructing new roads and parking facilities.

In 2012, the consortium led by TAV Airports Holding Company reached financial close on a $1.2bn deal to finance a project to take over the operation of Medina airport and expand its capacity.

The TAV Airports and Al-Rajhi Holding consortium has the concession rights to operate the airport until May 2041.

London-based firm Scott Brownrigg drafted the expansion masterplan.

Spanish firm Typsa assisted with the design of new baggage-handling system facilities, hold baggage screening, airside capacity assessment, airfield master planning update and geotechnical interpretative report.
