Oman to award Muscat Expressway contract by March

15 January 2026

Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications & Information Technology (MTCIT) is expected to award the contract to build the Muscat Expressway expansion project by March.

According to local media reports, the ministry is finalising the contract award procedures.

The expansion works include widening the roads between the Al-Qurum and Halban interchanges and the connection to the Batinah Expressway.

The Muscat Expressway starts in Al-Qurum in the east and ends in Al-Fulaij in the west, at the first interchange of the Batinah Expressway.

The scope of work includes widening the expressway to six lanes from the Al-Qurum interchange to the Batinah Expressway, widening existing bridges, associated interchange works, stormwater drainage systems and other associated works.

The project involves adding three lanes in each direction, bringing the total to 12.

The project scope includes connecting Sultan Haitham City to the Muscat Expressway.

In October 2024, MEED reported that firms had submitted bids for the project. These include:

  • Consolidated Contractors Company (Lebanon)
  • Strabag (Austria)
  • United Gulf Construction Company (Kuwait)
  • Ozkar Construction Company (Turkiye)
  • Sarooj Construction Company (Oman)
  • Galfar Engineering & Contracting (Oman)

In April 2024, MEED reported that Oman had appointed the US-based engineering firm Parsons as the project’s lead consultant.

The client is also evaluating bids for the construction supervision consultancy services for the project.

According to a report from UK-based data analytics provider GlobalData, the Omani construction industry’s output is expected to grow at an annual rate of 4.2% from 2025 to 2027, supported by investments in economic zones, renewable energy, manufacturing and tourism projects under Vision 2040.
