Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) and National Railway Industry Company of Egypt (Neric) have signed an agreement with Chinese firm Norinco International to supply trains for the Abou Qir metro line in Egypt.

According to an official statement, the contract’s scope includes the supply of 21 trains, spare parts, one driver simulator and technical support for local vehicle assembly.

The contract also covers 10 years of maintenance services and one frame repair service.

The Abou Qir metro line extends from Abou Qir to Misr Station in Alexandria, Egypt.

In June last year, MEED reported that NAT had selected French engineering firms Egis and the local Engineering Consultants Group for a contract to provide services on the Abou Qir metro line.

The contract scope includes project implementation support, contract management and construction supervision consulting services for the project.

The new metro route will be divided into two main sections.

The first section comprises a 15.5-kilometre (km) elevated section and a 6km ground-level section, both following the existing railway line.

The elevated section will have 14 new metro stations, including the Abou Qir terminal station, El-Maamoura station, Montazah and Victoria station, which will connect to the Raml Tram.

Six stations will be built along the ground-level section, including Kafer Abdou station linking to the depot, Sidi Gaber station providing a connection to the Raml Tram, and Misr station, which will connect to the existing railway network.
